ENDURING PRINCIPLES

The PhysioFuturist Perspective

Informed optimism. Critical independence. Technology in service of human flourishing.

PhysioFuturist approaches emerging technology with informed optimism and critical independence. Its purpose is to understand how technology can support human flourishing, with particular attention to physiotherapy, healthcare, and the responsibilities of professional practice.

Informed optimism means actively exploring opportunities to improve health, expand access, reduce burdens, and strengthen human capability. It also means allowing evidence and experience to change a judgment. Depending on the application, a responsible conclusion may support adoption, a limited trial, further investigation, delay, or rejection.

Critical independence means assessing claims through consistent standards. This requires examining evidence, questioning assumptions, acknowledging uncertainty, and remaining willing to revise a position. Financial, political, commercial, ideological, and institutional interests deserve scrutiny, including those connected to PhysioFuturist's own work. These interests provide context for evaluating a claim; its credibility still depends on the evidence and reasoning behind it.

Good judgment requires attention to context. A capability demonstrated under controlled conditions may have different implications in everyday practice. A possible outcome, a plausible scenario, a probability estimate, and a confident prediction each require different support. Clear conclusions should explain what is known, what remains uncertain, and which conditions could change the assessment.

The authority given to an AI system should reflect its task, reliability, permissions, and potential consequences. Safeguards should account for the likelihood and severity of harm, the scale of exposure, uncertainty, and whether errors can be detected and reversed. Credible anticipated risks can justify precautions before harm occurs. Decisions should also consider the consequences of delaying a useful application or retaining an inadequate existing approach.

Accountability requires practical arrangements. People responsible for oversight need the competence, time, information, and authority to challenge decisions and intervene. As systems take on greater responsibility, the arrangements for evaluation, supervision, and correction must remain effective.

Human flourishing is the enduring purpose. Health, function, autonomy, dignity, love, relationship, joy, peace, meaning, wisdom, and embodied experience all matter. In healthcare, this includes attention to trust, touch, presence, and the quality of care. People may value these outcomes differently, so decisions should consider the priorities of those affected and how benefits and burdens are distributed.

PhysioFuturist aims to make those decisions more thoughtful and more useful. It supports progress that helps people live well, alongside proportionate safeguards and a continuing willingness to learn.

PRINCIPLES IN PRACTICE

  1. Begin with human flourishing.

Define the human benefit being sought. Consider function, agency, relationships, meaning, and the priorities of those affected alongside performance and cost.

  2. Explore possibilities with informed optimism.

Investigate promising applications and evaluate them against a credible alternative. Let results determine whether to proceed, adapt, pause, or stop.

  3. Exercise critical independence.

Apply consistent standards to competing claims and to your own assumptions. Examine incentives, disclose relevant interests, and revise conclusions when warranted.

  4. Make clear judgments with context.

Explain the evidence, the assumptions connecting it to a conclusion, and the uncertainty that remains. State what the assessment supports and what would change it.

  5. Match autonomy with safeguards and accountability.

Consider capability, permissions, consequences, reversibility, and effective oversight. Evaluate the risks and benefits of action and inaction.

This Perspective expresses enduring commitments. It will be revised deliberately when the underlying reasoning changes, with substantive changes recorded.
